The Textile Creative seeks to strengthen the human-earth connection through the fashion and textile choices we make. We source local fiber. We grow our own dyes. We refinish, revitalize, and reuse everything we can, and we teach our community about the art of hand-craft, of preservation, and of making...as a function of living a thoughtful life.

Design

From natural fiber clothing to thoughtfully refinished furniture, our designs are simple, clean, and modern. With an emphasis on domestically produced, humanely sourced, and high quality materials, our goal is to reconnect people to the earth through the clothing and textiles they use every day of their lives.

Instruction

Do you yearn for more creativity in your life? Are you interested in making your own clothing, mending, or preserving the garments and textiles you already own? Check out TTC's workshop and events page! In addition to the listed offerings, Diana also teaches mini sessions at her tent at the South Durham Farmer's Market. And, if you're interested in hosting an "experience" event for friends or loved ones, Diana would be happy to tailor a workshop to your interests.

Natural fibers

Where do our clothes come from? How many garments do we actually need? The majority of our clothing is mass-produced in countries far away. This distance creates a comfortable separation between our closets and the damaging practices that are employed to bring us poor quality, disposable clothing made by hands of people whose lives are treated as if they're also disposable. Clothing is the second most damaging product outside of large-scale agriculture, yet we aren't making the connection. You can make thoughtful change ONE garment at a time. We can help you get there.

We source our fibers as locally as possible. We spend time on farms getting to know fiber producers and their animals, and then we take the fiber we source and turn it into beautiful (we think!) clothing and yarns for home use. We want to be able to answer when asked where our clothes come from. How about you?

Incorporate the use of natural dyes to add depth and color to your textiles. Our earth provides us with the tools needed to produce a rainbow of color with foraged and intentionally grown plant-based dyestuffs.

Meet Petal and Dexter, our purebred Satin Angora rabbits. They are the apple of Diana's eye (well, after her human babies, that is) and in 2018, she will begin using their fiber in her work. You can't get any more local than that.

We offer custom furniture refinishing.

Using natural dyes and polishes, we not only refinish, but we reinvigorate furniture in a creative way. Natural indigo transforms solid wood pieces. A new set of cushion covers will revive a tired but still functioning sofa. If your furniture needs a little something new, contact us!
