Workshop: Sashiko hand-stitching @ Durham Arts Council

Join me for a three-hour workshop that focuses on one of many inspiring Japanese hand-craft techniques- sashiko. The literal translation means “small stabs,” an intricate, somewhat tedious technique that was once used in boro-style mending. Sashiko became a widely used decorative stitching technique and is still practiced today. In the US and around the world, it’s being resurrected as a mending technique used on jeans- but it’s so much more than that.  Join me for a three-hour session that digs deeper into the practice of sashiko. We’ll cover:

-basic practice

-tools

-laying out and preparing a pattern

-history of sashiko in Japan and around the world
